Nov. 16: AYERS ROCK (ULURU)
(Lunch & Dinner)
Transfer from hotel to Cairns airport and fly to Ayers Rock. Upon arrival at Ayers Rock, you will be transferred by private coach to your hotel to freshen up before your tour to the Olgas - known to the Aborigines as ‘Kata Tjuta’.
Uluru National Park, 450km south west of Alice Springs, encompasses just a small portion of the vastness of central Australia. The spectacular Ayers Rock (Uluru) and the Olgas dominate the open barren landscape of sands plains and mulga woodland, rising up out of what is now a buried mountain range. These magnificent peaks are of great spiritual significance to the region’s tribal Aborigines; and you’ll be able to encounter the many sights and cave paintings that form an important part of central Australia Aboriginal mythology.
After lunch, we travel through desert plains for the short journey to The Olgas - known to the Aborigines as ‘Kata Tjuta’. You will be amazed by the sheer size and grandeur of these 36 massive domes of conglomerate red rock. Enjoy a guided walk to Olga Gorge and explore the unusually shaped formations.
In the late afternoon, we return to the hotel to freshen up for the Sounds of Silence dinner experience. The haunting sounds of a didgeridoo welcome you, as you view the sunset behind the Olgas. We dine under the canopy of the desert night, accompanied by the sounds of the great Outback. A local astronomer takes us on a tour of the Southern sky.
At the Sounds of Silence experience at Ayers Rock, we dine under the canopy of the desert night, while our very own storyteller shares tales as told in the stars.
Accommodation: Sails in the Desert Hotel (5-star).
Nov. 17: AYERS ROCK (ULURU) – KING’S CANYON
(All Meals)
After breakfast at the hotel, we take our private coach for a tour of the base of Uluru (Ayers Rock). Your guide will point out a number of interesting features of the world’s largest monolith in the desert plain. He then takes you on a walking tour of Mutitjulu Waterhole where you can view Aboriginal rock art. There is also time to visit the Uluru-Kata Tjuta Cultural Center.
Return to the hotel late this morning. We have lunch in the hotel restaurant today, before we depart Ayers Rock along the Lasseter Highway and Luritja Road to Kings Canyon, viewing Mount Conner along the way.
Buffet Dinner this evening in the hotel restaurant.
Accommodation: Kings Canyon Resort (4-star)
Nov. 18: KING’S CANYON - ALICE SPRINGS
(All Meals)
After breakfast we re-join our private coach and explore the boulder-strewn Canyon floor or swim in a rock pool in the Garden of Eden. Kings Canyon is one of the most interesting and scenic areas of the Red Center. The climb to the edge of the canyon rim is well worth it, offering spectacular views. Kings Canyon is the deepest gorge in the “Center”, and the canyon’s red walls tower up to 885 ft. Lunch is included at Kings Canyon Resort.
After lunch at the King’s Canyon Resort, we travel back along Luritja Road and the Lasserter and Stuart Highways to Alice Springs.
Alice Springs is the heart of Australia's Red Center. The town grew after the arrival of the railway from Adelaide in 1929 and today is a pleasant, modern town. The center of Alice Springs is compact; only a few streets wide and bounded by the Todd River on one side and the Stuart Highway on the other. Perhaps the best place to get an overall impression of Alice Springs is Anzac Hill, which forms the northern boundary of the town. Todd Street is the main shopping area and is lined with galleries displaying outstanding examples of Aboriginal arts, crafts and textiles.
Dinner at the Red Ochre Grill restaurant, which specializes in Australian seafood and regional Australian cuisine.
Accommodation: Crowne Plaza Alice Springs (4-star)
