ON FOOT THROUGH THE WILD

Our trekking route is designed around the movement of the wildlife, and centers on experiencing the pristine Tanzanian wilderness without the crowds. We set up our trekking camps in remote areas as well as in a private wildlife conservancy - OLMOLOG - on the western slopes of Kilimanjaro. This incredible area is rich in game such as kudu, leopard, gerenuk and elephant. It shares a common border with Kenya's Amboseli National Park.

We also trek through animal-rich areas of the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Conservation Area and take game drives inside the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park.

The combination of full day treks, as well as drives gives us an incredible opportunity to experience the variety of habitat, both close to camp, and miles away.

Day 1-2 Fly/Arrive Arusha, Tanzania

Arrive Tanzania. You are met at the airport by your guide and transferred to a hotel for a pleasant nights rest. Overnight at an Arusha Hotel (bed & breakfast).

Day 3-5 West Kilimanjaro OLMOLOG Conservancy
Day Treks

From Arusha you set off and start to circumnavigate the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro in customized safari vehicles. Olmolog is a very special wilderness area, deep in the heart of Maasailand where the Maasai people still live in harmony with the wild animals. Here you have 3 nights in a rare wilderness area. Set on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro and contiguous with the Amboseli ecosystem, the area consists of five different habitats. It allows us spectacular wilderness walking, and well habituated elephant populations, which we can approach very closely. Other species seen in the area are zebra, lesser kudu, and gerenuk.

Our days in Olmolog are spent tracking the wildlife on foot, and exploring the animal rich conservancy.

We'll have lunch in camp before we introduce you to the area. Then we set off with our Maasai hosts to visit a sacred ceremonial cave and a Maasai boma (village), learning about the fascinating ways of the Maasai. . In the evening we climb a nearby hill for a great view of sunset falling on the savannah plains below. Every evening we sit around the magical campfire before dinner.

Overnight West Kilimanjaro wilderness area (All meals).

Day 6 Great Rift Valley (Lake Manyara Escarpment)
Day Treks

Leaving the Olmolog conservancy, we follow a series of ancient volcanoes and pass through the bustling town of Arusha. After lunch we leave town, and drive up the winding rift valley wall in our safari vehicles to Kirurumu Tented Lodge, set on the edge of the Gregorian Rift Valley scarp. We can take a challenging hike up the rift valley, led by our guide. Kirurumu is Tanzania's pioneering eco lodge. The massive tents are complete with electricity, hot water (heated by solar power to piping hot temperatures) and comfortable beds. The bar, overlooking the rift valley floor, makes for a superb sundowner spot.

Overnight at Kirurumu Tented Lodge (All meals).

Day 7 Lake Eyasi
Day Treks

If you want an early start, we head out on a game drive in Lake Manyara National Park. The flora, fauna and birdlife of this unique little park makes for a superb morning of game watching. Or you can opt for a slow start with a morning ethno-botanical walk along the rift valley wall and learn how the locals use the vegetation for medicines.

We set off to a rarely visited part of northern Tanzania - Lake Eyasi. Eyasi is a salt lake situated between the Rift Valley's Eyasi escarpment and the Kidero Mountains. The area around Lake Eyasi is home to the Hadzabe bushmen, some of the last remaining hunter-gatherers on the continent. The Hadzabe have inhabited the acacia forests and scrubland around Eyasi for over 10,000 years. We arrive at the lake edge at the very special Kisima Ngeda Lodge, which overlooks the flats of the lakes and faces the 20 million year old Eyasi escarpment. In the late afternoon we head out on a short exploratory trip following in the footsteps of the Hadza that have lived here for thousands of years.

Overnight Kisima Ngeda Lodge (All meals).

Day 8 Ngorongoro Highlands
Trekking 5-8 Hours

We drive into the edge of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area where we meet an armed ranger who accompanies us for the day's hike. We leave the safari vehicles and set out on foot up the Eyasi Rift. The first section is steep and we take regular stops, enjoying the views as they become increasingly more dramatic. We continue our walk on to Misigiyo campsite, but for those that want take it a little easier a car is on hand to help out! In our comfortable trekking camp we have a full crew on hand to make ready hot showers and prepare our filling dinner.

Overnight Ngorongoro Camp (All meals.)

Day 9 Ngorongoro Crater
Game Drives

We make a relatively early start and drive into the Ngorongoro crater making the most of the morning activity. The game in this vast Caldera, the biggest unbroken Caldera in the world, is among the most concentrated in all Africa. The wildlife here is legendary, and allows us to approach very closely. This is also the best place in northern Tanzania to see black rhino. After most of the day in the crater, we head back to camp for showers and dinner.

Day 10 Ngorongoro Highlands
Trekking 4-6 hours

After a good breakfast, we start our Ngorongoro trekking safari, exploring the mountain rainforest and open glades on the volcanic mountains of Sadiman and Lemagrut. This hike offers spectacular views of the crater highlands and the Serengeti to the west. It gives us an opportunity to encounter some of the local mammals and birds while walking. Walking distance on the first day will be about 9 miles. On the trek we will be escorted by the indigenous Maasai tribesmen and their donkeys that ferry our camping equipment and food supply to camp.

Overnight Makarot Summit Trekking Camp (All meals).

Day 11 Olduvai Trekking Camp
Trekking 6-9 hours

We depart after breakfast from our Lemagrut mountain hideout and descend towards the open Serengeti plains hiking across open glades inhabited by local Maasai. This area is seasonally home to the great migration and always home to resident game such as giraffe and Grant's gazelle. We enter the acacia covered steppe near to the small Olduvai Gorge. Here, at the "Cradle of Mankind" we will spend the night at our Olduvai Trekking Camp while the sun sets over the Serengeti to the west.

Overnight Little Olduvai trekking Camp (All Meals)

Day 12 Serengeti Camp
Trekking 2-3 hours

After breakfast it is a 3 hour hike to the pickup point. We bid farewell to our trekking crew and head on to visit the museum on the edge of the Olduvai Gorge, an archeologists' haven and home to some of the most important anthropological finds on the planet. From here we head onto the 'Shifting Sands' and into the Serengeti. We see plenty of wildlife as we move onto our semi-permanent camp for the next two nights. This camp is moved seasonally, which is dictated by the movement of the game. From this base we will be able to explore different areas of the Serengeti.

Overnight Serengeti Camp (All Meals)

Day 13 Serengeti Camp
Game Drives

Today we have the whole day to explore the Serengeti. We like to rise early and set off on an exciting dawn game drive before heading back to the camp for brunch. After breakfast we have plenty of time to set off for the day seeking out elusive leopards and many other species. Dinner is taken back in camp for a final night in the wild under a canopy of stars.

Overnight Serengeti Camp (All Meals)

Day 14 Fly to Arusha/Home
Game Drive

In the morning we drive to the airstrip on a last game drive, before catching a flight to Arusha. Here we have vehicles on standby for last minute shopping. After lunch in town, you will have access to a day room at a local hotel to freshen up before your international flight home.
