THE MOVIE: THE KINGS OF KILIMANJARO

Tusker Trail Kings of Kilimanjaro

Embark on a thrilling journey into the heart of Kilimanjaro, where the unsung heroes of every Kilimanjaro climb come to life – the Guides, Chefs, and Porters who defy the odds to make each climb possible. These remarkable individuals are more than just mountain guides; they are the soul of Kilimanjaro itself. The stars of this epic tale are none other than the Kings of Kilimanjaro, hailing from the ancient Chagga tribe in Marangu, where their roots run deep, spanning centuries. For them, scaling Kilimanjaro isn’t just a job; it’s a calling, etched into their very DNA.

Within this awe-inspiring movie, you encounter eight extraordinary Indigenous characters. They are not just guides; they are world-class athletes, High Altitude First Responders, and on-demand performance coaches. Their unwavering commitment is singular: to empower travelers from foreign lands to achieve the zenith of physical and spiritual triumph – achieving the summit of Kilimanjaro and returning home to share their extraordinary tales.

Prepare to be captivated by the resilience, bravery, and unbreakable spirit of these unsung champions as they guide adventurers through the breathtaking majesty of Kilimanjaro, and building an adventure of a lifetime.

EDDIE FRANK, Tusker Trail’s owner and founding guide, shot the film with his brother.

GUIDING STANDARDS:  NAVIGATING THE GULF

When it comes to summiting the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro, one of Africa’s most iconic peaks, the importance of a skilled guide cannot be overstated. Kilimanjaro is not just a mountain; it’s a formidable challenge, standing at 19,341 feet (5,895 meters) above sea level. The austere environment, altitude, extreme weather conditions, and challenging terrain pose a considerable challenge even to the most seasoned climbers. It’s essential to have a professional guide who knows the terrain, understands altitude sickness, exposure to austere weather and is trained to monitor your safety. However, here’s the truth: there is a massive, undeniable discrepancy in the quality of guides available on Kilimanjaro.

The discrepancy in guide quality can have a profound impact on a climber’s experience. Those who opt for reputable experienced companies can expect a smooth and safe journey. Their guides are not only skilled with many years of experience and training,  but also attentive to climbers’ needs, making the ascent as safe and comfortable as possible.  At one end of the spectrum, there are longstanding, well grounded local companies like Tusker Trail that provide top-tier services, employing expert guides who ensure climber safety and comfort.

On the other end, there are substandard operators that compromise safety, environmental ethics, and overall enjoyment. Climbers who choose lesser-known or poorly rated companies may encounter a range of issues. These can include inadequate equipment, inferior food and accommodation, and guides who lack the expertise to handle emergencies. Such experiences can lead to disappointment, and even danger.

The Gaps in Experience

One of the most glaring disparities in Kilimanjaro guiding is the variation in experience levels. On one hand, you have seasoned guiding companies like Tusker Trail who provide their guides with hundreds of hours of high altitude medical training, and whose professional guides have  hundreds of successful summits under their belt. They know the mountain inside out, can identify potential hazards, and have honed their skills over many years of Kilimanjaro training and guiding.  On the other hand, you’ll encounter guides who are relatively inexperienced, sometimes even on their first climb as a guide.

Quality of Training

The discrepancy in training standards is an issue. While some guides receive rigorous training that includes wilderness medicine, rescue techniques, and natural history, others might lack these critical skills. The latter may struggle to deal with altitude-related illnesses or navigate emergency situations, potentially putting your safety at risk.

Safety Measures

Safety should always be the top priority on Kilimanjaro, but not all guides adhere to the same safety measures. Some experienced guides carry essential emergency equipment, like supplemental oxygen, pulse-oximeters, stethoscopes, portable hyperbaric bags, heavy duty stretchers and comprehensive first-aid kits, while others might not. The discrepancy in safety preparedness can make a huge difference when things go sideways.

One of Tusker Trail’s strengths lies in the rigorous HIGH ALTITUDE FIRST RESPONDER medical training program for the guides, emphasizing safety protocols, client care, and sustainable practices. The guides are well-versed in first aid and high-altitude medicine, ensuring that climbers are in capable hands the entire journey.

Environmental Concerns

Another aspect to consider is the environmental awareness of guides. Tusker Trail is a member of the LEAVE NO TRACE Organization,  and follows its principles religiously. While the majority of guiding companies are ethical and environmentally conscious, some guides and their teams leave behind litter and do not follow Leave No Trace principles. Choosing a responsible guiding company whose guides value the preservation of Kilimanjaro’s fragile ecosystem is crucial.

Ethical Porter Treatment

Climbers must consider the treatment of porters when choosing a guide company. Ethical treatment of porters is not only a moral imperative but also contributes to the overall quality of the climbing experience.

Choose a guiding company such as Tusker Trail,  that has had a porter support policy for decades.  Choose a company that pays fair local wages, provides proper working conditions, and respects porter rights. Your guiding company should be a member of the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project, which sets international standards for ethical porter treatment.

So, what can you do to bridge this gaping chasm of guide quality on Kilimanjaro?

Do Your Research

Before booking your Kilimanjaro adventure, thoroughly research potential guiding companies. Look for reviews, ask for references, and check for certifications and affiliations with reputable organizations like the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project.

Don’t hesitate to ask questions about the company’s guide experience, training, and safety measures. Request detailed itineraries and inquire about their commitment to eco-friendly trekking practices. Consult with fellow trekkers, travel forums, or adventure enthusiasts who have climbed Kilimanjaro. Personal recommendations can be invaluable in choosing a reliable guiding company.

Pricing and Value

In the world of Kilimanjaro guiding, you often get what you pay for. The wide range of prices reflects the vast differences in guide and climbing quality. While lower priced options may seem appealing, they often come with compromises in safety, equipment, and overall quality. Top-notch guiding companies, on the other hand, charge higher fees, but the investment usually translates into a safer and more rewarding climb.

Tusker Trail: A Beacon of Excellence

Tusker Trail stands out as a shining example of a company dedicated to the highest guiding standards on Kilimanjaro. With 50 years of Kilimanjaro guiding experience and a commitment to responsible tourism, Tusker has built an enviable reputation. Tusker guides are not just experienced; they are true experts with many decades of experience working for Tusker Trail.

The discrepancy in the quality of guides on Kilimanjaro is a stark reality. To ensure your safety and have a truly memorable experience, it’s essential to choose a guiding company that aligns with your expectations and values. Kilimanjaro is a challenge worth undertaking, but it’s crucial to be well-prepared and make an informed choice to ensure a successful and safe ascent.
