Your South Patagonia adventure begins when you arrive in Puerto Natale, on the shores of the Última Esperanza Sound . Named by sailor Juan Ladrilleros in 1557, “Última Esperanza,” or “Last Hope,” seemed to be his last possibility of getting to the Straits of Magellan.
After we collect our bags and load up, we have a short drive to the start of the hike up to the tranquil Laguna Sophia. The moderate 2-3 hour hike gives us far reaching views of the stunning mountains, towering granite walls and an exciting condor nesting area that surround Natales.
From Laguna Sophia we descend to the renowned Milidon Cave where the remains of an extinct giant sloth were found. Consisting of multiple fascinating caverns, the site holds many archeologic treasures, including human remains that give us clues to the area's earliest inhabitants.
