In November 2012, Tusker Trail is heading to Australia for another exhilarating Total Solar Eclipse trip down-under!
Eddie Frank is once again teaming up with Dr. Laurance Doyle, a renowned N.A.S.A and S.E.T.I astronomer, to guide an eclipse trip that is a one-of-a-kind adventure into the celestial and terrestrial realms. The pair have teamed up to lead Eclipse trips in Zambia (2001), southern Australia (2002), Ghana (2006) and Mongolia (2008), and the 2012 Australia trip is the latest in a string of exceptional Eclipse trips around the globe.
Highlights of an Extraordinary Journey
The itinerary for the 2012 trip is titillating. A few of the highlights include – A full day tour of beautiful Sydney, complete with a luxury harbor cruise; Marveling at the stunning southern skies in Coonabarabran, a friendly country town known as “Australia’s Astronomy Capital”; Visits to the Siding Spring Observatory, Australia’s foremost optical astronomy research center and home to the giant 3.9 m mirror Anglo-Australian telescope; Watching the Queensland coastline unfold on an overnight train ride, known for its comfort, flexibility, and great social atmosphere, from Brisbane to Cairns; Exploring Cairns, the heart of the Tropical North, a vast region stretching from reefs to islands, from coastal wetlands to mountain; A Skyrail adventure through the rainforest canopy to the village of Kuranda; Nightly astronomy lectures from Dr. Doyle; And the 35-year expertise of adventure veteran, Eddie Frank.
For the actual Eclipse, the group will spend time in Amaroo, a tented camp being built especially for the event. Amaroo is the Aboriginal word for “beautiful place”, and it most certainly lives up to its name.
Amaroo is the premier place for viewing the eclipse. The pristine 50-acre property, at the top of a ridge, has unobstructed 360-degree views, and almost no man-made structures nor any light pollution. Backing onto a World Heritage Rainforest, there are spectacular sunrises over the Barron River, as well as canoeing oppurtunities and amazing forest hikes.
At Amaroo, the group will enjoy an out-of-hotel experience in a gorgeous setting with comfortable camping, hot showers, an indigenous flavor, amazing food, fun activities and entertainment.
Amaroo is located within a few miles from the centerline of the zone of totality. On November 14th, the eclipse will occur in totality at 6:40 AM, with the sun 14-degrees above the horizon. From our location on the ridge, the group will be able to see the eclipse for just over two minutes.
Great Barrier Reef Wrap-Up
After savoring the eclipse, the final full day of the trip will be spent cruising around the Great Barrier Reef on a fabulous catamaran. Snorkeling lessons and use of snorkeling equipment, as well as an informative ecological presentation, guided nature tour, and live music entertainment, will all be available for Eclipsers to enjoy during their homeward sail to Cairns. Not a bad wrap-up for a trip that is already jam-packed with excitement!
At the end of the Eclipse trip, travelers can head home or stay abroad for a riveting Outback Extension that flies out to world-famous Ayers Rock.
As you can see, Eddie Frank and Laurance Doyle will be working their magic once again, outdoing themselves on this latest Eclipse adventure. Doyle will be packing his 7-inch Dobsonian Telescope, along with his cosmic sense of humor, while Frank will contribute his 35-years of guiding expereince, as well as his hands-on-approach to adventure and wry wit. As agreed, Doyle arranges (almost) everything celestial, and Eddie Frank arranges (almost) everything terrestrial.
Don’t Miss Out!
Throughout their years of offering one-of-a-kind Eclipse trips around the globe, Dr. Doyle and Eddie Frank have many loyal repeat Eclipsers. The Tusker office has received an influx of calls, and early reservations are already in place for the November 2012 adventure. The trip will be capped at around 30 people, and about a third of those spots have already been reserved.
We would love to have you along on this captivating adventure, and with Eddie Frank and Dr. Doyle at the helm, you can be assured that you are signing up for a trip that eclipses all others.
