Marangu Climbing Route Day 3 We drive to Marangu National Park gate and sign in. Then we start our hike for about 4-5 hours through the lush montane forest to Mandara Hut. As you scan the tree canopy, you'll see the excitable black and white colobus monkeys.

Mandara consists of a cluster of mountain huts in a forest clearing, which you share with other members of your group. Meals are prepared by our cooks and served up in a common dining area, where you meet climbers from all parts of the world and share the thrill of your climb. The huts have running water and shared public toilets.

DAY 4 ~ HOROMBO HUT

12,340-ft/3,761-m • 7.14 miles/11.5 km • 6 hours

We leave the rainforest behind, entering the heath and moorland zone. You get your first view of Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks in the distance as the mountainside gradually opens up. We arrive at Horombo Hut mid-afternoon, where you can relax and enjoy the stunning scenery, while our chefs get busy in Tusker's Adventure Kitchen.

We spend 2 nights at Horombo to acclimatize.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Lodging: Mountain Huts

DAY 5 ~ HOROMBO HUT

12,340-ft/3,761-m • Acclimatization hike

Marangu Climbing Route Day 5 The purpose of our extra day here at Horombo is simple – acclimatization. To help you adjust to the altitude, we like to spend this extra day here and hike to a higher elevation to get your body used to the thinner air. This prepares your body for the following days as we climb higher and make our ascent to the summit, where the air has 50% of the oxygen found at sea level.

After the morning altitude hike, we return to Horombo for lunch and an easy afternoon.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Lodging: Mountain Huts

DAY 6 ~ KIBO HUT

5,446-ft/4,708-m • 7.5 miles/12 km • 6 hours

Marangu Climbing Route Day 6 After breakfast we continue our trek through the alpine desert habitat. Once across the barren Kibo Saddle, between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks, we start our climb up to Kibo Hut, on the slopes of Kibo Peak.

On a clear day you'll be able to see Gilman's Point on the crater rim, a key landmark on our way to the summit. After arriving at Kibo around mid-afternoon, we relax, then have dinner and prepare for our climb to the summit around midnight.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Lodging: Mountain Huts

DAY 7 ~ UHURU PEAK – HOROMBO

Summit: 19,341-ft/5,895-m • 4.2 miles/6.7 km • 7-8 hours

Horombo Hut: 12,340-ft/3,761-m • 12.7 miles/20.5 km • 6-7 hours

Marangu Climbing Route Day 7 Your guide wakes you up just before midnight with some hot tea and snacks. Then we start the uphill climb. Today's the toughest day, with the most stunning sunrise views of Mawenzi, the Kibo Saddle and the plains below.

We slowly wind our way over the rocky outcrops through the scree until we reach the rim of the crater at Gillman's Point. The toughest part of the climb is over, as we only have about 2 hours to the summit - Uhuru Peak - where the view awaiting you is truly awe-inspiring.

Once there, we celebrate, and head back down towards Horombo for the night.

Meals Included:  Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Lodging: Mountain Huts

DAY 8 ~ MARANGU GATE - MOSHI

Gate: 6,102-ft/1,859-m • 12.3 miles/19.8 km • 6 hours

Moshi: 3,000-ft/914-m • 90 minute drive

After breakfast, we start our hike down past Mandara Hut, then to the national park gate and to our hotel in Moshi. It's a beautiful hike as we pass through the rainforest near Mandara.

The Tusker vehicles meet us at the gate and then take us back to our hotel for a well-deserved shower and a final climb celebration.

EDDIE TALKS...

Kilimanjaro Climb Company Founding Guide Eddie Frank

"I am very sentimental about the Marangu route, as it was the first one I climbed on Kilimanjaro back in the 1970’s - not long after Kilimanjaro was declared a national park.  Back then, only a few people climbed it every year.  Nowadays, when I go up Marangu, it reminds me of the incredible sense of wonder you get when you walk in the footsteps of history, and the emotion you feel when you overcome a personal challenge for the very first time. "

YOUR CLIMBING CREW

One of the keys to the success of your climb is your climbing crew. They are the backbone of your adventure and ensure that your camp and gear is set up at each new location on the climbing route. The team is made up of porters and chefs that are fiercely loyal to Tusker Trail and who have been part of our family for decades.

Your porters and chefs also provide an incredible window into Tanzanian culture. They introduce you to the inspiring music of Kilimanjaro which will inspire you to put one foot in front of the other. All in all, you and your team are part of one big family, on a trek to the top of Africa.
