March 31: Arrival in Merida - Yucatan

When you arrive in Merida in the Yucatan and transfer to the Mayaland Hotel, you feel the magic and wonder of the ancient Maya people. Built in 1923, it was the first hotel in Chichén Itzá. Mayaland is a creation of Old Yucatan, built and operated by the original owners and their family.

April 1: Merida, Yucatan

  • Ek’Balam, Cenote Maya, Chichén Itzá

We visit the archaeological site of Ek’Balam, an ancient Mayan city which dates back 2,000 years. It wasn’t until the late 1980’s when the site was mapped. This archaeological site has been recently restored and is mesmerizing. We then head out to explore the majestic Cenote Maya, a deep limestone pool, created when an underground cavern collapse. It has the largest dome in the Yucatan Peninsula, and you can take a refreshing swim in this natural jewel. Lastly, we discover the heart of the Mayan culture, by taking part in an authentic blessing ceremony and enjoying a traditional buffet prepared with organic vegetables.

April 2: Merida - Yucatan

  • Mayan Ceremony, Mayan Cuisine

Today is an immersion in everything Mayan, as we explore the culture and history of Chichen Itza, a UNESCO World heritage site. The program consists of a day packed with unforgettable activities to help bring your knowledge of the Mayan culture full-circle.

  • Mayan Ceremony - Take part in an authentic Mayan ceremony officiated by an H’ Men, a Mayan priest, and witness an ancient spiritual ceremony.
  • Secrets of Mayan Cuisine - Discover the secrets of Mayan cuisine as you learn how to prepare"Pollo Pibil,” and then sample your creation.
  • Observe the Universe - Your journey continues with the movie "Tales of the Maya Skies", a short film projected on a 360-degree surface in the Mayan Planetarium. Dr. Laurence Doyle augments the presentation as he discusses the astronomical significance of the Mayan temples. 
  • Sacred City of Chichén Itzá - You enter Chichén Itzá’s archaeological site through private gates, skipping the long lines at the main entrance. You learn about the historical significance of the most important temples of the Classic Maya Central Area (not seen by most visitors to Chichén Itzá). 
  • Lunch & Maya Language Lesson - Enjoy the "Pollo Pibil" you prepared earlier! You will also hone your skills with a Mayan language lesson, most helpful for when you return home! 
  • Mayan Numerology - The use of the number 0 and the binary number system we use in computers today was invented by the Maya. Learn its basic principles and understand their numerology.

April 3: Oaxaca 

  • The Best of Oaxaca

Today we take a short flight to Oaxaca, the gastronomic capital of Mexico. The state of Oaxaca (wah-hah-kah) exudes a unique magic felt by foreigners and Mexicans alike. A citadel of indigenous culture, it is the home of Mexico’s most intense arts and crafts scene, with some incredibly vivid and lively festivities and an especially delectable cuisine riches.

April 4: Oaxaca

  • Bike, Art, Hike, Pre-Hispanic Oaxaca

Today you’ll choose between two exciting full day adventures.

Bike, Art, Sunset Hike at Mitla -
We visit the magical pre-Columbian town of Mitla and explore the town by bicycle. Mitla is a quaint town of quiet streets, handicraft shops, museums, artisan bread workshops and textile masters. We end the day with a beautiful sunset hike. 


Pre-Hispanic Oaxaca -
We begin our tour to the Pre-Hispanic Caves of Mitla, that tell the story of the ancestors dating back 12,000 years. In some of them you can see cave paintings and capricious formations in the walls and ceilings. We continue on to the magical town of Mitla, to visit its City of the Dead, the archaeological zone of area. We go to Teotitlán del Valle, a community where people are skilledat making fine wool rugs with pedal looms using hand-dyed wool.

April 5: Oaxaca

  • Pre-Hispanic Gastronomy

We go to four unique tasting locations throughout the day. Covering about a mile, we walk to these spots where you sample over 20 different foods and beverages (including Mezcal, if you prefer) from local restaurants and specialty shops.  At each tasting location, you enjoy foods that contain some of the most important elements found in traditional Oaxacan food such corn, chiles, and chocolate. You can also taste a variety of Mezcal – as well as delicious agua frescas (fruit juices) while learning about the local culture and history.

April 6: Mazatlán

  • Explore Mazatlán

Today we fly to Mazatlán.  The afternoon and evening are free for you to relax and explore the beautiful city.

April 7: Mazatlán

  • Tour of Mazatlán, Old Observatory

We start with a tour of the golden zone, explore the boardwalk with its monuments, and the beautiful centenary walk. We then reach the funicular that takes us up to Cerro del Vigia, location of  the 1873 Observatory, one of the oldest buildings in Mazatlán. It has spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean and the city. We join a guided tour in what is now a museum with 3 old telescopes. Dr. Doyle also regales us with some great tales of the night sky. Then we descend to Mazatlán’s historical center and enjoy a dinner at the Plazuela Machado.

APRIL 8: Eclipse - Mazatlán

  • Specially scouted private viewing site - 2 hours from Mazatlán, on the Eclipse Centerline

We leave the hotel after breakfast andtake a 90-minute drive to our private location on the centerline of the Eclipse shadow. First contact will occur at noon local time, and totality occurs 1hr 17 mins later at 1:18 pm. Totality will be 4m 28secs. Our site will be equipped with tables, chairs, lunch, shade canopies and toilets. We will invite the local villagers to participate with us.

After the eclipse, we celebrate and enjoy a fiesta with the local villagers before heading back to our hotel in Mazatlán.

OPTIONAL BEACH EXTENSION

APRIL 9: Fly to Manzanillo

As the rest of the group flies back home, you continue your Mexico adventure with a flight through Mexico city to the coastal city of Manzanillo. After landing at the airport you drive to your hotel locate on the picturesque Península de Santiago with spectacular coastal views. You arrive at the hotel in time for an enjoyable sundowner, and then dinner.

April 10: Manzanillo

  • Snorkeling, ATV Adventures

Today you’ll choose between two exciting full day adventures.

Snorkeling Manzanillo's Quiet Waters -
Explore the underwater world and enjoy the quiet waters of Manzanillo.  Discover the secrets of the Pacific in the best places of Santiago Bay. If you do not have experience your instructor will teach you how to use your equipment and will guide you through the most interesting underwater locations where you will find the most diverse flora and fauna of the bay. Snails, starfish and multicolored fish are common sighting. 

Manzanillo ATV Adventure -
If it's an adventure you're after, experience the thrill of a Honda ATV, powerful and easy to handle. Your professional guide will lead you through rugged mountain trails to the unspoiled and endless beach of Peña Blanca. On the trail, capture spectacular views from atop La Vaca mountain and discover the secrets of the tropical forest, and the friendly locals at Rancho El Indio.

APRIL 11: Manzanillo

  • Plantation Tour, Cuyutlan Turtle Sanctuary

Tropical Plantation Tour -
Explore the villages and lush countryside surrounding Manzanillo, as you meander through tropical plantations of coconut, bananas, mangoes, papayas and limes. Stopping at the banana plantation, you learn all about this tasty fruit from your local guide. You then visit the rustic fishing village of Barra de Navidad and take a scenic stroll around. 

You enjoy a fresh seafood lunch served at a local restaurant with a great view of the bay.  The afternoon is free to enjoy at your own leisure in Manzanillo.


Tour of Cuyutlan -
Cuyutlan is located 45 minutes South of Manzanillo past a freshwater lagoon and the coconut groves. On a visit to the Cuyutlan Salt Museum you’ll learn how sea salt is mined.

You’ll also discover more about the local efforts to preserve wildlife such as iguanas, crocodiles and sea turtles at the Cuyutlan Turtle Sanctuary. With a bit of luck we will be able to free newly hatched baby sea turtles into the Pacific Ocean. Prepare yourself to discover the best of Palo Verde lagoon's amazing flora and fauna. Crocodiles, iguanas, exotic birds and many other can be seem.

APRIL 12: Fly Home

Today after a hearty breakfast you gather your luggage and load up for a trip to the airport, and your return flight home.
