WHAT IS A KILIMANJARO HIKE LIKE

Undertaking a Kilimanjaro hike unveils the true essence of the journey—it’s not a leisurely stroll, but a rigorous multi-day hiking adventure  demanding physical endurance, mental fortitude, and a passion for exploration. Typically lasting  6 to 11 days, hikers acclimatize gradually to the altitude, a vital strategy in warding off altitude sickness and getting the most enjoyment from your adventure. WHERE IS KILIMANJARO

Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, stands proudly in northeastern Tanzania, near the border with Kenya. Rising abruptly from the surrounding plains, it has two peaks, MAWENZI and UHURU, which top out at 19,340 feet/5,895 meters.

Located within Kilimanjaro National Park, the mountain dominates the savannah landscape, and beckons to adventurers from around the globe. The bustling town of Moshi, located at the foot of the mountain serves as the main starting point for hikers embarking on the hike to attempt to summit this iconic peak.

WHEN TO HIKE MT. KILIMANJARO

The ideal time to hike Mt. Kilimanjaro is during the dry seasons, typically from June to early October, and from mid-December to mid-March. During these times you’ll have clearer skies for great scenic views and less precipitation with drier trails. The peak rainy seasons occur from mid-March to late May and from November to early December.

During the rainy seasons you’ll pretty much have the mountain to yourself, with great solitude and a magical experience. This is because most people travel during the dry season.

HOW TO PLAN A KILIMANJARO HIKE

Preparation for your Kilimanjaro hike  is key. Focus on building cardiovascular fitness, strength, and getting used to higher altitudes in the months leading up to your climb. Packing the right gear — sturdy boots and warm clothes are essential for tackling Kilimanjaro’s ever-changing conditions. And don’t forget outer garments to keep you dry because you never can predict the weather.

When planning your Kilimanjaro hike, it’s important to go with a highly experienced company that runs its own climbs.  That way they are able to adapt to your needs minute to minute.  Also choose a company that employs highly experienced guides spends a great deal of effort in training their guides in high altitude safety.
