OUR CLIMBING ROUTES
There are six routes you can climb on Kilimanjaro. In Tusker’s 40 years on Kilimanjaro we have climbed all of them. These days we climb three of the six available routes. We climb LEMOSHO, MACHAME and the NORTHERN CIRCUIT-KILI 360. We climb these three routes because they offer us a greater variety in duration (an important factor in acclimatization), as well as the distinctive different landscapes you can experience.
You can climb this route in 11 or 12 days. It is a slightly longer route, which allows you to acclimatize to the altitude. It also gives you extra time to enjoy the spectacular mountain environment. Lemosho is not highly traveled as it is longer, and therefore costs a bit more, but is one of the more scenic routes up Kilimanjaro and one of our favorites.
This route, which approaches from the west, takes you full 180 degrees around the peak, exposing you the incredible variety of landscapes, which differ from the west to the east. On this route, we prefer to summit during daylight hours to enjoy the views, the warmer weather, and to avoid the crowds in the early morning gathering at the summit. On the 12-day climb we sleep in the crater after summiting, which very few people do. It’s pure magic up there in the crater. On the 11-day climb, we do not sleep in the crater, but head straight down after summiting.
NORTHERN CIRCUIT - KILI 360
On Tusker's Kili 360 Northern Circuit route we traverse the untouched northern slopes. On this trail the views are nothing short of spectacular, as it is true wilderness and rarely trekked. Because of the longer duration, you acclimatize well, making your summit easier, more fun and truly rewarding.
This is the shortest of the routes that we climb. This means it’s a less expensive climb, therefore attracts more climbers. In the high season, this route is fairly well populated with climbers, which you meet at the campsites and at the summit.
The approach on the Machame route is from the south, not far from our hotel in Moshi. This is the only route where we start for the summit around midnight, allowing us to reach the crater rim at sunrise. As the route is shorter than the others which we use, acclimatization to the altitude tends to be harder for most folks. That’s why the preferred routes to climb are the longer routes, such as Lemosho and Northern Circuit – Kili 360.
