MOUNT KILIMANJARO IS A TOP BUCKET LIST ACHIEVEMENT

Bucket Brigade

Mount Kilimanjaro and bucket lists are synonymous. We figure at least half of our climbers are bucket listing when they climb Kilimanjaro with Tusker. Some of their reasons are obvious – Kilimanjaro is an iconic beacon luring over 40,000 each year in a shared quest to hike to Africa’s rooftop. But there are more subtle and personal reasons why they choose to climb Kilimanjaro. They see it as a peak achievement.

Why Kili?

The intersection of climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro and thousands of bucket lists can be found on a map of an aging human heart. As some of us age and move beyond the world of work and child raising, we still feel the need to challenge ourselves. Travel is a good way to stay in the game with its opportunity to learn and to continue to grow. Kilimanjaro is one of the few places where we can test ourselves and reignite that sense of achievement. It requires us to stretch beyond our limits, and in doing so it keeps us invigorated. Equally important is that Kilimanjaro can be climbed and summited by most people who are fit and healthy.

Larry’s Quest

Larry Parman is one such Kili bucket lister. A retired attorney, Larry successfully summited after a fraternity brother challenged him to join a charity climb. He didn’t think he could pull it off, but he made the summit and on his descent in the rainforest fell and injured his shoulder. The pain was worth it because Kilimanjaro encapsulated his quest to remain vibrant in retirement.

Larry reflects, “A bucket list is a long-term plan. It creates a vision of our future. It can also evolve. Values and principles are pretty static, often unchanged during most of our lives, but goals change. So can our bucket list, sometimes very quickly, like mine did when I was challenged by my fraternity brother. If we are constantly seeking personal and professional development and fulfillment, it is inevitable our bucket list will keep growing. And we should not just look at it and dream about it. We must take action and do it. Ask, ‘If I happen to leave this great life 90 days from now, what one thing do I want to accomplish?’ Then attack it. For me, an exciting, challenging, yet dangerous accomplishment like Mt. Kilimanjaro reinforced many deeply held convictions.”

It’s Personal

Bucket lists can be as trivial as turning your weedy backyard into a green oasis. It can be visiting the Louvre in Paris or photographing Machu Picchu at dawn. It’s a personal experience and no two buckets lists match up.

Kilimanjaro with its cradle of civilization roots, its challenging week long climb, its glaciated summit overlooking the sizzling African continent, is one of the few major mountain bucket list destinations that’s accessible to the average person. It’s as much mental as it is physical. If you’re adventurous and want something to stoke your eternal flame, then fire up your dream!

Eddie Frank

Expedition Guide, Tusker Trail Founder/Owner

Born and raised in Africa, Eddie Frank cut his teeth on dust roads, wild horizons, and the call of the unknown. In 1977, while leading his first expedition across Africa, Kilimanjaro sank its hooks into him - and Tusker Trail was born. For 49 years Eddie has forged a legacy as a pioneer of Adventure Travel. On Kilimanjaro he established Kilimanjaro climbing standards with advanced altitude medical training for his guides, custom-built camp gear and helped establish porter working standards by treating his crew with dignity. He didn’t just climb Kilimanjaro - he built Tusker into the benchmark of adventure, where safety, grit, and discovery define every step to the summit.

The Pulse of Adventure

Away from Kilimanjaro’s slopes, Eddie’s rhythm doesn’t change. Maps spread across the table, his guitar gently weeping, the spark of the next wild journey already alive. Adventure isn’t just his career - it’s the pulse that drives every beat.

Why Eddie Does It

Eddie launched Tusker Trail in 1977 to plant himself in the hot seat of adventure. From his first expedition across Africa and up Kilimanjaro, he chased the unknown—trekking Mongolia’s wild Altai with nomads, cutting across Patagonia’s fierce winds, and standing beneath Everest’s towering face. For Eddie, the journey has always been more than summits. It’s about immersion - sharing tea with herders in felt tents, trading words in new tongues, and unraveling the stories woven deep into every culture. Adventure isn’t a pastime. It’s his relentless pursuit of discovery, and the force that’s shaped Tusker Trail into his life’s true expedition.
